제나 할러웨어는 세계적으로 수중 사진을 이끌어가고 있는 사진 작가 중 한 사람입니다.
2015년 처음 한국에서 단독 사진전을 가진 후, 한국에도 이름을 알리며 사랑받는 사진 작가가 되었습니다.
당시 인터뷰에서 해녀 이야기를 듣고 흥미가 생겼고, 물속을 자유롭게 돌아다니는 그들의 모습을 카메라에 담고 싶다는 이야기를 했던 그녀.
다음에 한국에서 전시회를 하게 된다면 해녀의 모습을 찍은 사진을 전시하고 싶다고 했던 그녀가 최근에 <해녀>를 주제로 한 프로젝트를 공개했습니다.

세계적으로 수중 사진을 이끌고 있는 제나 할러웨어가 한국의 해녀를 소재로 찍은 사진 프로젝트입니다.
해녀에 대한 그녀만의 독특한 시각으로 <해녀> 프로젝트를 완성했습니다.

The Haenyeo are believed to be the last of the mermaids; an ancient tradition where the women harvest the ocean from childhood into old age. Their story is about the breath of life or 'Sumbi' and the breath of death or 'Mulsum'. A fishing girl models their life in an underwater dance, shown here wearing a jeogori made from net and a crown made from a mask.

With glittering feathers and scales she dances in the black water as if rising out of the ashes. This series of images was inspired by the Haenyeo or 'sea women' of South Korea who dive fearlessly to harvest and look after the ocean well into old age.

“해녀는 그들의 어머니로 부터 자녀까지 1000년 동안 이어진 전통이다. 그들은 제주도에서 문어와 다른 해산물들을 샅샅이 탐색하고 별다른 호흡장비 없이 20미터까지 탐험하는 한국의 인어, 혹은 해녀입니다.”

그녀의 공식사이트에 프로젝트와 함께 기재해둔 해녀 속담처럼 외롭고 쓸쓸하지만 강인하게 바다를 헤엄치는 인어, 해녀의 모습을 재해석하여 화보로 담아냈습니다.

와이진은 한국 최초 여성 수중사진작가입니다.
그녀는 수중촬영을 하기에 적합하지 않은 몸이였지만 두려움보다 호기심을 가지고 수중촬영을 시작했다고 합니다.
수중촬영을 하면서 꼭 한번 다루고 싶었던 주제가 있었는데 그게 바로 ‘해녀’였다고 합니다.
그녀는 해피해녀 프로젝트를 위해 상업적인 촬영을 하며 돈을 벌고, 그 비용을 이 프로젝트를 진행하는데 사용하였다고 합니다.
일본 아마가 아닌 한국 해녀의 문화를 진심으로 알리고 싶어서 결심했던 프로젝트라고 합니다.

“흔히 해녀 팔자가 기구하다고 하잖아요. 제가 처음 본 해녀의 모습은 달랐어요. 다섯 시간 동안 물질을 하고 나와서도 60kg가 넘는 태왁을 멜 때를 제외하곤 웃음이 끊이질 않더라고요. 해녀도 수많은 직업 중 하나일 뿐인데 해녀 관련 사진집은 고되고 힘든 모습을 담은 무채색 사진이 전부였어요. 제 해녀 사진집에 컬러풀하고 경쾌한 분위기의 사진만 사용했던 이유도 편견에 가려진 행복한 해녀들의 삶을 담고 싶어서였어요. 해피 해녀 프로젝트라는 이름은 행복한 해녀의 삶을 그대로 보여준다는 의미죠.”

외국인들에게 일본의 아마와 한국의 해녀는 다르다는 것과 그들의 문화를 꼭 알리고 싶었다는 작가는 제주도에서 해녀와 함께 생활하며 그들의 모습을 꾸밈없이 담아냈습니다.
